Stamped concrete at a house

Carmel Concrete Pros pours stamped concrete for homes across Carmel. The stamped concrete we pour gets a pattern pressed into it while it is still wet, so the finished slab looks like stone, brick or slate. We measure the space, show you patterns and colors, and write you a quote before anyone digs.

How we stamp concrete

On the stamped jobs we pour, the start is the same as any slab. We dig out the ground, lay a stone base and pack it down hard. We set wooden forms, the boards that hold the wet concrete in shape, around the edge.

Then we pour and smooth the concrete and add the color. While the top is still soft, we lay rubber stamping mats on it, one next to the next, and press the pattern in. We have to move quickly here, since the pattern only takes while the concrete is still soft.

Once it has set, we wash off the powder we use to keep the mats from sticking, cut the joints, and seal the surface. The joints are the straight grooves you see across a slab, and we line them up with the pattern so they are hard to spot.

Patterns and colors

We can stamp a pattern that looks like flat stone slabs, brick, cobblestones, slate or wood planks. We can color the whole slab, then add a second, darker color on top so the low parts of the pattern stand out. We can also run a plain, smooth border around the edge of the stamped area.

We bring pattern and color samples to your house, so you can hold them up against your brick and siding before you choose.

Where we pour stamped concrete

We pour stamped concrete patios, walkways, pool decks and driveways. On a stamped area where people walk barefoot or where it gets wet, we pick a pattern with more texture and can add grit to the sealer so it is less slick underfoot.

Carmel permits for stamped concrete

The City of Carmel's permit page lists a home patio over 120 square feet as needing a permit, with the note "Permit required as of April 27, 2026." The fees it lists for that permit are:

  • 10 cents per square foot for filing and review.
  • $100 for each inspection the city decides it needs during plan review.

For that permit, the city asks for a site plan that shows where the patio sits in relation to your property lines and any easements, with the distances marked. It also asks for your HOA's approval. The city describes an easement as part of your property that other parties also have rights to use, such as for drainage or utilities.

We also check whether your stamped driveway or walkway runs out to the street. Before any work out at the street, in the area the city calls its right-of-way, you need a right-of-way permit. Before we quote, we tell you which permits your job needs.

What to get in writing

Ask for these in writing, whoever you hire:

  • The size and shape of the stamped area.
  • The pattern name and the colors, matched to the samples you picked.
  • How thick the concrete will be, and what base goes under it.
  • Which way it slopes, and where the water goes.
  • Where the joints will be cut.
  • What sealer goes on, and whether grit is added to it.
  • Whether the job needs a permit, and who applies for it.

Questions about stamped concrete in Carmel

Does water drain off stamped concrete?

Rain can't soak through the stamped concrete we pour, so we slope it away from your house. The City of Carmel says local soils drain poorly and have seasonally high water tables, and that property owners are responsible for managing groundwater around their homes. We plan where the water runs before we mark out the edges.

Do you call 811 before you dig?

We do, every time. Indiana's Call Before You Dig law requires everyone who digs to contact Indiana 811 at least two full working days before starting. We make that call so buried utility lines are marked first.

Can you take out my old slab first?

Yes, we can break out an old concrete slab and haul it away before we pour. The EPA says brick, concrete and masonry can be recycled on site as fill or driveway bedding. We tell you where the old concrete is going before we break it up.

Is cutting the joints dusty?

OSHA says cutting, sawing, grinding and drilling concrete makes very small particles of crystalline silica, at least 100 times smaller than ordinary sand. It says workers who breathe them in are at higher risk of serious diseases caused by silica. When we cut joints, we ask you to keep back while we work.

Does stamped concrete need sealing again later?

We seal every stamped slab we pour when we finish it, and we tell you when we think it is due for another coat. See our concrete sealing page.

Can you stamp my existing concrete?

We can't press a pattern into a slab that has already set, because the stamp only works on wet concrete. We can take out the old slab and pour a new stamped one.

How much does stamped concrete cost?

We price stamped concrete once we've measured, and you get that quote in writing. We base it on the size, the pattern, how many colors you pick, and how much digging the ground needs.
