Carmel Concrete Pros pours new concrete patios for homes across Carmel. We measure the space, look at where the rain runs, and write you a quote before anyone digs.
How we build a concrete patio
On the patios we pour, we dig out the grass and soil, lay a stone base and pack it down hard. We set wooden forms, the boards that hold the wet concrete in shape, around the edge of the patio. Then we pour, smooth the top and cut the joints, which are the straight grooves you see across a slab of concrete.
We slope every patio we pour a little away from the house, so rain runs off toward the lawn and not toward your back door.
Shapes and finishes
We can pour a plain square patio, or give it curved edges or wrap it around a corner of the house. We can give the top a broom finish, which is a light texture that helps stop feet slipping when it's wet. If you want it to look like stone or brick, see our stamped concrete page.
Carmel's patio permit
The City of Carmel's permit page lists a home patio over 120 square feet as needing a permit, with the note "Permit required as of April 27, 2026." The fees it lists for that permit are:
- 10 cents per square foot for filing and review.
- $100 for each inspection the city decides it needs during plan review.
For that permit, the city asks for a site plan that shows where the patio sits in relation to your property lines and any easements, with the distances marked. It also asks for your HOA's approval, plus other drawings of the job, and says it may ask for more during the review. The city describes an easement as part of your property that other parties also have rights to use, such as for drainage or utilities.
Before we quote, we tell you if your patio is over that size and go through the plans the city wants with you.
Where the rain goes
The City of Carmel says local soils drain poorly and have seasonally high water tables. It also says property owners are responsible for managing groundwater around their homes through foundation drains, sump pumps, grading and similar measures. Rain can't soak through the patios we pour, so we work out where that water will run before we mark out the edges.
What to get in writing
Ask for these in writing, whoever you hire:
- The size and shape of the patio, and how far it sits from your property lines.
- How thick the concrete will be, and what base goes under it.
- Which way the patio slopes, and where the water goes.
- Where the joints will be cut.
- The finish on top.
- Whether the job needs a permit, and who applies for it.
Questions about concrete patios in Carmel
Do you call 811 before you dig?
We do, every time. Indiana's Call Before You Dig law requires everyone who digs to contact Indiana 811 at least two full working days before starting. We make that call so buried utility lines are marked before we dig out for your patio.
How does the city get the patio plans?
The City of Carmel says that after you fill in the first form on its online permit portal, which it calls a pre-application, you get an email inviting you to upload your plans to ProjectDox, the city's plan review software. We help you get those drawings ready.
Can you take out my old patio first?
Yes, we can break out an old concrete patio and haul it away before we pour the new one. The EPA says brick, concrete and masonry can be recycled on site as fill or driveway bedding. We tell you where the old concrete is going before we break it up.
Is cutting the joints dusty?
OSHA says cutting, sawing, grinding and drilling concrete makes very small particles of crystalline silica, at least 100 times smaller than ordinary sand. It says workers who breathe them in are at higher risk of serious diseases caused by silica. When we cut joints, we ask you to keep back while we work.
Can you add steps down from the back door?
Yes, we can pour steps from your door down to the patio as part of the same job. See our concrete steps and porches page.
Should I seal my new patio?
We can seal it, and we'll tell you whether we think your patio needs it. See our concrete sealing page.
How much does a concrete patio cost?
We price your patio once we've measured it, and you get that quote in writing. We base it on the size, how much digging the ground needs, and the finish you pick.
