Carmel Concrete Pros replaces old concrete driveways for homes across Carmel. We look at the old slab and the ground under it, and we write you a quote before anything is broken up.
How we replace a driveway
First we break up the old concrete and haul it away. Then we check the ground underneath it, since that is where we look for the reason the old slab gave out. We dig out any soft soil, lay a fresh stone base and pack it down hard.
After that, the new driveway goes in the same way as any driveway we pour. We set wooden forms, the boards that hold the wet concrete in shape, put steel in the slab where the job needs it, pour, smooth the top and cut the joints.
What happens to the old concrete
Old concrete doesn't have to go to the landfill. The EPA says brick, concrete and masonry can be recycled on site as fill or driveway bedding. It also says asphalt, concrete and rubble are often recycled into new asphalt and concrete products. We tell you where your old driveway is going before we break it up.
Why water matters in Carmel
The City of Carmel says local soils drain poorly and have seasonally high water tables. So when we replace your driveway, we look at where the water goes first, and we reshape the slope so rain runs toward the street or the lawn, not back toward your garage.
Carmel's rules when you replace a driveway
The City of Carmel's Engineering Department sets out its driveway rules in its online FAQ:
- Before any work out at the street, in the area the city calls its right-of-way, you need a right-of-way permit. The city says you also need to post a bond before work starts there.
- A home driveway should be at least 12 feet and no more than 20 feet wide where it meets the street.
- Each property gets one curb cut, which is the city's term for an access point from your lot to the street. A second one needs approval from the Board of Public Works and Safety.
- If any part of the driveway sits in an easement, a Consent to Encroach Agreement must be signed. The city describes an easement as part of your property that other parties also have rights to use, such as for drainage or utilities.
We check your new layout against these rules before we give you a quote.
What to get in writing
Ask for these in writing, whoever you hire:
- How the old driveway will be broken up, and where it goes.
- How much soft ground will be dug out, and what new base goes down.
- How thick the new concrete will be, and whether there is steel in it.
- Where the joints will be cut.
- Which permits the job needs, and who applies for them.
- When you can drive on the new driveway.
Questions about driveway replacement in Carmel
Can I keep the same shape and size?
Yes, we can pour the new driveway on the same footprint as the old one. If you want it bigger, see our driveway widening page.
Do I have to dig up my whole driveway?
Not always. If only a few spots have cracked or sunk, we may be able to fix them with concrete repair or concrete leveling. We tell you which one we think makes sense after we look at it.
Do you call 811 before breaking up the old driveway?
We do, every time. Indiana's Call Before You Dig law requires everyone who digs to contact Indiana 811 at least two full working days before starting. We make that call so buried utility lines are marked first.
Is breaking up concrete dusty?
OSHA says cutting, sawing, grinding, drilling and crushing concrete makes very small particles of crystalline silica, at least 100 times smaller than ordinary sand. It says workers who breathe them in are at higher risk of serious diseases caused by silica. When we break out your old driveway, we ask you to keep back while we work.
Can you replace the sidewalk at the same time?
Yes, we can. The City of Carmel says sidewalk maintenance is the property owner's job, apart from the sidewalks its Street Department looks after along City streets and around the edges of subdivisions. If you repair one, the city requires you to replace full panels of sidewalk. See our concrete sidewalks page.
Can I switch to stamped concrete?
Yes, we can press a pattern into the new concrete so it looks like stone or brick. See our stamped concrete page.
How much does driveway replacement cost?
We price your driveway once we've measured it, and you get that quote in writing. We base it on the size, how much old concrete comes out, how much base work the ground needs, and the finish you pick.
