Carmel Concrete Pros pours new concrete walkways for homes across Carmel. We walk the route with you, look at where the rain runs, and write you a quote before anyone digs.

How we build a concrete walkway

On the walkways we pour, we dig out the grass and soil along the path, lay a stone base and pack it down hard. We set wooden forms, the boards that hold the wet concrete in shape, along both edges. Then we pour, smooth the top and cut the joints, which are the straight grooves you see across a slab of concrete.

We finish the top with a broom, which leaves a light texture that helps stop feet slipping when it's wet.

Where a walkway can go

We pour walkways from the driveway up to the front door. We also pour paths around the side of the house to a gate, or from the back door out to a patio or shed. A walk can run straight, or we can curve it around a flower bed or a tree. If you want it to look like stone or brick, see our stamped concrete page.

Where the rain goes

The City of Carmel says local soils drain poorly and have seasonally high water tables. It also says property owners are responsible for managing groundwater around their homes through foundation drains, sump pumps, grading and similar measures. We slope each walkway a little to one side, so rain runs off into the lawn instead of sitting on the path or running back toward the house.

Easements and the street

The City of Carmel describes an easement as part of your property that other parties also have rights to use, such as for drainage or utilities. Before we mark out a walkway, we check the drawing of your lot for any easement the path would cross.

We also check whether your walkway runs out to the street. Before any work out at the street, in the area the city calls its right-of-way, you need a right-of-way permit. We tell you which permit your job needs and who applies for it before we give you a quote.

What to get in writing

Ask for these in writing, whoever you hire:

  • The route, length and width of the walkway.
  • How thick the concrete will be, and what base goes under it.
  • Which way the walkway slopes, and where the water goes.
  • Where the joints will be cut.
  • The finish on top.
  • Whether the job needs a permit, and who applies for it.

Questions about concrete walkways in Carmel

Do you call 811 before you dig?

We do, every time. Indiana's Call Before You Dig law requires everyone who digs to contact Indiana 811 at least two full working days before starting. We make that call so buried utility lines are marked before we dig out the path.

Can you take out my old walkway first?

Yes, we can break out an old concrete walk and haul it away before we pour the new one. The EPA says brick, concrete and masonry can be recycled on site as fill or driveway bedding. We tell you where the old concrete is going before we break it up.

Is cutting the joints dusty?

OSHA says cutting, sawing, grinding and drilling concrete makes very small particles of crystalline silica, at least 100 times smaller than ordinary sand. It says workers who breathe them in are at higher risk of serious diseases caused by silica. When we cut joints, we ask you to keep back while we work.

Can you add steps up to the front door?

Yes, we can pour steps where the walkway meets your porch or door as part of the same job. See our concrete steps and porches page.

Can you fix the public sidewalk at the same time?

Yes, we can work on the concrete sidewalk in front of your house on the same visit, and we join the new walkway to it cleanly.

Should I seal my new walkway?

We can seal it, and we'll tell you whether we think your walkway needs it. See our concrete sealing page.

How much does a concrete walkway cost?

We price your walkway once we've measured it, and you get that quote in writing. We base it on the length and width, how much digging the ground needs, and the finish you pick.
