Carmel Concrete Pros levels sunken concrete driveways, walks, patios and steps for homes across Carmel. We look at how far each slab has dropped, tell you whether we can raise it or it needs replacing, and write you a quote before any work starts.

How we raise a sunken slab

We call it concrete leveling when we lift a slab that has sunk back up to the height of the concrete around it. We also hear it called mudjacking or slab jacking. We drill a few small holes through the slab and pump material into the gap underneath it, and the slab rises as the gap fills. Then we fill each hole so it sits flush with the top.

When leveling is the right fix

We level a slab when it has sunk in one piece and is still solid. If it's broken into pieces, crumbling or flaking on top, we'll tell you straight that lifting it won't fix that, and we'll quote concrete repair or a new section instead.

Trip edges on walks and steps

We level a sunken sidewalk panel or walkway so its edge no longer sticks up where someone could catch a toe. The CDC says falls among adults 65 and older caused over 43,000 deaths in 2024, making it the leading cause of injury death for that group.

Carmel's rules for the sidewalk out front

We plan every sidewalk job around the City of Carmel's rules:

  • The City of Carmel says sidewalk maintenance is the property owner's responsibility. It says its Street Department looks after the sidewalks around the outside of subdivisions and the ones along City streets.
  • If a panel is too broken to lift, we replace it. The city says that if you repair your sidewalk, you have to replace full panels of sidewalk.
  • Before any work out at the street, in the area the city calls its right-of-way, you need a right-of-way permit.

We tell you which permit your job needs and who applies for it before we give you a quote.

Water under the slab

The City of Carmel says local soils drain poorly and have seasonally high water tables. Before we lift a slab, we look at where rain runs off it and where it soaks in.

We call the straight grooves cut across a slab its joints. We use the word deicers for the salts and liquids people spread to melt ice. The Federal Highway Administration says that if the seal in a joint fails, deicer and water get into the joint and soak the concrete around it, and if the ground under the joint doesn't drain, the water can't get out. So once a slab is back up, we seal its joints and the gap along its edges to keep more of that water out.

What to get in writing

Ask for these in writing, whoever you hire:

  • Which slabs will be lifted, and how far.
  • What material goes under each slab, and where the holes will be.
  • How the holes will be filled.
  • Which joints and edges will be sealed afterward.
  • Which permits the job needs, and who applies for them.
  • When you can walk or drive on the lifted concrete.

Questions about concrete leveling in Carmel

How much does concrete leveling cost?

We price your leveling job once we've looked at it, and you get that quote in writing. We base it on how many slabs need lifting, how far each one has sunk, and any permit the city asks for.

Is drilling the holes dusty?

OSHA says cutting, sawing, grinding and drilling concrete makes very small particles of crystalline silica, at least 100 times smaller than ordinary sand. It says workers who breathe them in are at higher risk of serious diseases caused by silica. When we drill your slab, we ask you to keep back while we work.

Can you level a sunken step?

Yes, we can lift a step that has dropped, as long as it's still in one piece. If the step is cracked through or has pulled away from the house, we may suggest new concrete steps instead.

Can you level a patio that tips toward the house?

Yes, we can lift a patio slab that has sunk at the house end, so it slopes away from your walls again.

Will the holes show?

We fill each hole with a gray patch level with the top, so up close you'll see small round spots on the slab.

Can you level a slab that has pushed up?

We can't push a raised slab back down, because leveling only lifts concrete. When a slab has pushed up, we grind down the raised edge or replace that section.
