Carmel Concrete Pros repairs and replaces concrete sidewalks for homes across Carmel. We look at the cracked or uneven sections, check the city's rules for your street, and write you a quote before any concrete comes out.

How we replace a sidewalk

We pour a sidewalk in panels, the squares you see between the straight grooves. When one is cracked or heaved, we saw it out at its grooves, break it up and haul it away.

Then we dig the soil down, lay a stone base and pack it hard. We set wooden forms, the boards that hold the wet concrete in shape, and pour the new panel level with the ones on each side, so nobody trips on a raised edge. We smooth the top, drag a broom across it so it isn't slippery when wet and cut the grooves to line up with the old ones.

Carmel's rules for sidewalk repairs

We plan every sidewalk job around the City of Carmel's rules:

  • The city says that if you repair your sidewalk, you have to replace full panels of sidewalk.
  • Before any work out at the street, in the area the city calls its right-of-way, you need a right-of-way permit.

We tell you which permit your job needs and who applies for it before we give you a quote.

Where the water goes

The City of Carmel says local soils drain poorly and have seasonally high water tables. It also says property owners are responsible for managing groundwater around their homes through foundation drains, sump pumps, grading and similar measures. We slope each new panel so rain runs off it instead of sitting on the walk.

What to get in writing

Ask for these in writing, whoever you hire:

  • Which panels will be replaced, and how many.
  • How thick the new concrete will be, and what base goes under it.
  • How the new panels will meet the old ones and the driveway.
  • Which permits the job needs, and who applies for them.
  • When you can walk on the new sidewalk.

Questions about concrete sidewalks in Carmel

Who has to fix the sidewalk in front of my house?

The City of Carmel says sidewalk maintenance is the property owner's responsibility. It says its Street Department looks after the sidewalks around the outside of subdivisions and the ones along City streets.

Does the city ever pay for a sidewalk repair?

Sometimes. The City of Carmel says one exception is damage caused by a faulty City sewer pipe or storm sewer pipe. That does not cover the pipes that run from the street to your own house.

Will the new panels match the old ones?

We tell you before we pour that new concrete starts out a different shade from a sidewalk that has been outside for years. If an even look matters to you, we can talk about concrete sealing or replacing more of the walk.

Do you call 811 before you dig?

We do, every time. Indiana's Call Before You Dig law requires everyone who digs to contact Indiana 811 at least two full working days before starting. We make that call so buried utility lines are marked before we dig.

Is cutting out the old panels dusty?

OSHA says cutting, sawing, grinding and drilling concrete makes very small particles of crystalline silica, at least 100 times smaller than ordinary sand. It says workers who breathe them in are at higher risk of serious diseases caused by silica. When we saw the old panels, we ask you to keep back while we work.

What happens to the old concrete?

The EPA says brick, concrete and masonry can be recycled on site as fill or driveway bedding. We tell you where the broken-up panels are going before we start.

Can you also pour a walkway to my front door?

Yes, we can pour a concrete walkway from the sidewalk or driveway up to your door at the same time, and we slope it the same way so water runs off.

How much does a new sidewalk cost?

We price your job once we've measured it, and you get that quote in writing. We base it on how many panels come out, how much digging the base needs, and any permit the city asks for.
