Carmel Concrete Pros pours concrete pads for sheds and hot tubs in back yards across Carmel. We measure the spot, look at where the rain runs, and write you a quote before anyone digs.
How we build a shed or hot tub pad
On the pads we pour, we dig out the grass and soil, lay a stone base and pack it down hard. We set wooden forms, the boards that hold the wet concrete in shape, around the edge of the pad. Then we pour, smooth the top and cut the joints, which are the straight grooves you see across a slab of concrete.
We make the top of every pad we pour flat and level, so the shed or tub sits evenly on it.
What we ask about your shed
We ask how big the shed is and what you plan to keep in it, such as a mower or heavy tools. We pour the pad a little bigger than the shed, so the walls sit fully on the concrete.
What we ask about your hot tub
We ask for the maker's guide for your hot tub, and we build the pad to what that guide says. We also plan the pad around where your electrician will bring power to the tub, so nothing has to be cut out later.
Carmel's permit rules
The City of Carmel's permit page lists an accessory structure over 120 square feet, such as a large shed, as a home permit type. The fees it lists for that permit are:
- $1 per square foot for filing and review.
- $100 for each inspection the city decides it needs during plan review.
The city asks for a site plan that shows where the shed sits in relation to your property lines and any easements, with the distances marked, plus your HOA's approval. It says a foundation plan is only needed for projects over 200 square feet. The city describes an easement as part of your property that other parties also have rights to use, such as for drainage or utilities.
The same page lists a swimming pool or spa as its own permit type, with a $500 filing and review fee plus 20 cents per square foot for the pool and deck area. For that one, the site plan has to show the spa, its equipment and the deck in relation to your property lines and easements.
Before we quote, we go through with you which of these your job might need.
Where the rain goes
The City of Carmel says local soils drain poorly and have seasonally high water tables. It also says property owners are responsible for managing groundwater around their homes through foundation drains, sump pumps, grading and similar measures. Rain can't soak through the pads we pour, so we work out where that water will run before we mark out the edges.
What to get in writing
Ask for these in writing, whoever you hire:
- The size of the pad, and how far it sits from your property lines.
- How thick the concrete will be, and what base goes under it.
- Which way the pad slopes, and where the water goes.
- Where the joints will be cut.
- Whether the job needs a permit, and who applies for it.
Questions about shed and hot tub pads in Carmel
Do you call 811 before you dig?
We do, every time. Indiana's Call Before You Dig law requires everyone who digs to contact Indiana 811 at least two full working days before starting. We make that call so buried utility lines are marked before we dig out for your pad.
How does the city get the plans?
The City of Carmel says that after you fill in the first form on its online permit portal, which it calls a pre-application, you get an email inviting you to upload your plans to ProjectDox, the city's plan review software. We help you get those drawings ready.
Can you take out an old slab first?
Yes, we can break out an old concrete slab and haul it away before we pour the new pad. The EPA says brick, concrete and masonry can be recycled on site as fill or driveway bedding. See our concrete removal page.
Is cutting the joints dusty?
OSHA says putting water on a saw blade when cutting concrete greatly cuts the amount of dust it makes. We keep water on the blade when we cut the joints in your pad.
Can you pour a path out to the shed or hot tub?
Yes, we can pour a path from your back door or patio out to the pad as part of the same job. See our concrete walkways page.
Can the hot tub pad be part of a new patio?
Yes, we can pour the hot tub pad and a new patio together. See our concrete patios page.
How much does a shed or hot tub pad cost?
We price your pad once we've measured the spot, and you get that quote in writing. We base it on the size of the pad and how much digging the ground needs.
